BonifacioThe City of the Cliffs: a place of legend and wonder
Bonifacio is one of the most memorable destinations in South Corsica, and it's easy to see why: the town appears to be perched on top of high limestone cliffs, with a citadel clinging to the rock, a characterful upper town, and a sheltered harbour below. From Porto-Vecchio, the drive to Bonifacio generally takes less than an hour, depending on traffic, making it a feasible day trip or even a well-planned half-day outing.
The contrast is what makes the visit so interesting: you move from a bustling Mediterranean harbour to old alleyways, then to the ramparts and the viewpoints overlooking the strait that separates Corsica from Sardinia.
The King of Aragon's Staircase
One of the symbols of Bonifacio, this staircase, carved into the limestone cliff, descends directly to the sea. Legend has it that it was carved out in a single night by Aragonese troops during the siege of 1420, but the truth is more mundane: it was a staircase providing access to a water source.
